Medicare’s Complex Neurodevelopmental Disorders and Eligible Disabilities Scheme

The early identification of, and intervention for, individuals with complex neurodevelopmental disorders is important in promoting positive longer-term outcomes as symptoms can cause clinically significant impairment in social, occupational or other important areas of functioning.

Medicare rebates are available for the assessment and diagnosis of complex neurodevelopmental disorders, specifically Autism and intellectual disability. Access to Medicare rebates for the assessment of Autism or intellectual disability requires a referral from either a paediatrician or psychiatrist under Medicare’s Complex Neurodevelopmental Disorders Scheme.

The scheme promotes a multi-disciplinary approach to assessment and diagnosis by allowing paediatricians and psychiatrists to refer individuals to a psychologist for assistance in completing a thorough and accurate assessment, helping to formulate a diagnosis for those suspected of having a complex neurodevelopmental disorder.

With the correct referral from a paediatrician or psychiatrist under Medicare’s complex neurodevelopmental disorders scheme for Autism or intellectual disability assessment, you can claim up to four Medicare rebates (one rebate per hour).

Please note that seeing a paediatrician or psychiatrist involves a fee, so it's important to weigh this cost against the potential rebate amount. When booking your appointment, it’s advisable to clarify the purpose of your visit in case additional time is needed, and to ask about the fee charged.

To claim Medicare rebates for an assessment for Autism or intellectual disability, your paediatrician or psychiatrist must refer you using the correct Medicare item numbers listed below. Be sure to share this information with your referring doctor, as they will know which item number to use.

You must be referred for assessment services before your paediatrician or psychiatrist can develop a Treatment and Management Plan for you.

Please note that the individual being assessed must be under 25 years old, and these rebates can only be claimed once in a lifetime.

Once the assessment is complete, we will provide a written report to your paediatrician or psychiatrist. This report will include our findings, any relevant diagnoses, and recommendations for further assessment and treatment to help your paediatrician or psychiatrist create a Treatment and Management Plan.
